How family carers can avoid burnout

If you are the relative holding everything together, respite is not a luxury — it is what makes long-term caring possible.

The Premald Care Team2 min read

Most of the care in the UK is delivered by relatives, unpaid and largely unnoticed. It is also the arrangement most likely to collapse suddenly, because nobody is monitoring the carer.

Early warning signs

  • Broken sleep even when you have the chance to rest
  • Resentment or guilt that arrives together
  • Cancelling your own appointments repeatedly
  • Feeling unable to leave the house for an hour

What actually helps

Small, reliable, repeating relief works better than occasional large gestures. A regular two-hour visit at the same time each week is easier to protect than a week away once a year.

Respite visits, sitting services and overnight cover can all be arranged around what you already do, rather than replacing it.
