So you want to do garage conversions in your home but you live in a neighborhood with a home owner’s association (HOA) that rules with an iron thumb. But you need your space converted and you cannot afford to more so what are you going to do?
Home Owner’s Associations (HOA) were created for a good thing. They care about the community they live in and want it to look nice. It was a nice way to legally keep homeowner’s responsible to their yards and homes and not letting them go into disarray to depreciate the entire community.
HOA rules are supposed to benefit the community and not one person. If the rules are getting too strict or too ridiculous then perhaps it is time to make a change. Are you up for the challenge?
Most of these HOAs are run and managed by people who are later in life and have more time to manage responsibility. The drawback of this may be that the thinking of an older person may not gel with the rest of the neighborhood. They are usually secure in their life and finances and do not understand the need for a garage conversion. They just know that it is against the rules and they are there to enforce them.
If you can’t stand the rules change them. Do you have the power to do that? Sure you do, as you are a home owner to and have rights to your property. Some HOAs get a feeling of false power and let it go to there heads. But if you get a group of people in your neighborhood that think like you on any matter you can get the rules changed.
Once you come to an agreement, a law change or a new board you can make the changes you need to. You can amend the HOA laws to be less strict on garage use. Then you and your neighbors can use the garage for whatever you want to use it for.
Be ready for a battle and you may have some casualties. The casualties may be neighbors that just don’t like you any more. But in the long run if you live in a community you have to find a way to live with each other. You can have your garage conversions and know that you are no longer ruled by a factious dictator of an HOA.
