Facial Tissue: Keeping Your Child Center Germ Free

Many of my articles touch on the importance of sanitation in a day care facility and tools to keep buildings sanitized. Most people begin worrying about germs and sanitation the most when the weather begins to get cold.

Cold and flu season is coming, whether we are ready for it or not! For child care facilities, cold and flu season means runny noses! If not handled properly, runny noses result in contamination and the spreading of germs. Kids don’t always understand the importance of using tissues. It is the job of care givers to keep childrens’ noses clean and dry. As a day care director, you must keep facial tissues readily available to your employees and children.

For effectiveness, tissues should be placed in every room of a facility. They should be conveniently located. There should also be tissues in areas that children are able to reach. Most of the time kids would probably prefer their shirtsleeve to soft facial tissues, but on that rare occasion they may decide to use the correct material.

Caregivers should encourage children to use tissues and explain the importance of them. To help prevent their friends from getting sick, children should wipe their noses well with tissues, rather than their shirt or anything else they may come up with. If they need more than one tissue, encourage them to use more. Make sure they do not go over board though. No one wants to walk into a room with a whole box of tissues covering the floor. After they have properly wiped and blown their nose, the facial tissues should be placed in a trash receptacle that is properly lined with a can liner (aka. Trash bag or garbage bag). Washing hands thoroughly is the final step to proper nose wiping. Hands should be washed with thoroughly with soap and water.
